SEC Extends Deadline to Review FINRA Day Trading Margin Proposal
The SEC extended the deadline from February 28, 2026, to April 14, 2026, for considering a proposed rule change to amend the FINRA margin requirements rule .
In December 2025, FINRA proposed the rule change to amend Rule 4210 ("Margin Requirements"). In its filing with the SEC, FINRA proposed to "replace its current day trading margin provisions with modern intraday margin standards." (See previous coverage.) The proposal would eliminate the existing "pattern day trader" framework — including the $25,000 minimum equity requirement and day-trading buying power calculations — and replace it with a new intraday margin regime focused on real-time risk exposure and intraday margin deficits.
