Republican Senators Question IRS Distribution of CFPB Flyers
In a letter to Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, Republican Senators Michael Enzi, Ron Johnson, James Lankford, Mike Rounds, John Kennedy and Johnny Isakson urged the Treasury to stop the IRS from becoming a "conduit" for CFPB communications with the public.
Among other concerns, the Senators questioned the legality of IRS distribution of CFPB fliers to taxpayers. Saying the IRS was being used as a vehicle to "solicit Americans' stories about money," the Senators advised the Treasury to curtail the practice given that the CFPB is supposed to act as an independent organization. Additionally, they questioned whether it was proper to use taxpayer dollars (i.e., unappropriated Federal Reserve monies) for CFPB marketing purposes.
