MSRB Issues New Guide Outlining Ways to Buy Municipal Bonds

The MSRB issued a new guide describing several alternative ways to buy municipal bonds. The guide is intended "to help retail investors weigh their options when buying or selling municipal securities."

According to MSRB, depending on investment needs, desired level of involvement and appropriate type of fee structure, investors have the following choices: (i) using the services of a broker-dealer or a bank department that is a municipal securities dealer; (ii) hiring an investment manager who can locate and trade bonds on specific instructions or general authority; (iii) engaging in direct online trading through a self-managed account; or (iv) buying or selling shares in a municipal bond mutual fund or exchange traded fund.
