SEC Chair White Speaks at Annual Practicing Law Institute About the Less Publicized Parts to the SEC

SEC Chair Mary Jo White spoke at the Practicing Law Institute's 45th Annual Securities Regulation Institute about the less publicized aspects of the SEC. Chair White began by explaining that the media only catches a small sampling of the work that goes on at the SEC, yet all work is vital to maintaining the integrity of the securities markets and investor confidence.

According to Chair White, one aspect of the SEC that is often under-publicized is the Office of International Affairs, which builds and expands international relationships that make regulatory coordination and cooperation possible. The Office of International Affairs also provides seminars for foreign regulators trying to better understand the securities industry, and the enforcement practices and procedures the SEC uses. Chair White also mentioned the 900 examiners, who are not well known to the public and inspect around 25,000 entities. In closing, Chair White stated she could not possibly go through all the SEC's "unsung heroics" and that all of the 4,000 SEC staff keep the security markets safe and see to it that investors' interests are protected.
