FINRA staff reported findings from a research initiative focused on "the opportunities and risks that the metaverse may present" for the financial services industry.

In The Metaverse and the Implications for the Securities Industry, staff from FINRA's Office of Financial Innovation (i) identified metaverse applications for training, (ii) researched customer engagement and data visualization within the securities industry and (iii) considered potential regulatory and operational challenges. In the report, FINRA staff defined the "metaverse" as "virtual worlds that are immersive and interactive and may be experienced in new ways through technological developments in hardware and software."

Among the findings:

  • Sales and Data Visualization: Firms are exploring 3D and virtual environments to enhance data analysis and presentations, potentially offering investors clearer insights through immersive formats.
  • Virtual Trading: Trading desks may benefit from virtual environments, where traders can interact with data in 3D formats and collaborate seamlessly across geographies.
  • Digital Twins: Financial institutions are developing "digital twins" of real-world environments, improving firms' abilities to conduct simulations and risk assessments.
  • Payments and Crypto Assets: Metaverse platforms are offering increased digital transactions, with many users engaging in commerce and holding assets like cryptocurrency.
  • Training: Learning in a metaverse environment may be superior to learning in a physical or online classroom.

The report highlighted challenges, including cybersecurity risks, data privacy concerns and issues with interoperability across metaverse platforms. FINRA urged firms to prioritize safeguards as they venture into these virtual environments. In addition, the staff addressed industry interest in investor education and recruitment within the metaverse, particularly targeting younger audiences. FINRA emphasized that the use of metaverse technologies should align with existing regulatory frameworks and called for greater input from industry participants to shape guidelines further.
