Executive Order Targets Persons Contributing to "Deteriorating" Situation in Mali

In an Executive Order, President Donald J. Trump authorized the imposition of sanctions on persons who contribute to the "deteriorating" situation in Mali.

President Trump described recent actions in Mali as an "unusual and extraordinary threat to the national security and foreign policy of the United States." According to the Executive Order, President Trump stated that the current "situation" in Mali includes (i) violations of the 2015 Agreement on Peace and Reconciliation in Mali, (ii) the expansion of terrorism in southern and central Mali, (iii) an increase in drug and human trafficking, human rights abuses and hostage-taking, and (iv) attacks against civilians, Mali's defense and security forces, and the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilizations Mission in Mali.
