OFAC Adopts Sanctions Regulations concerning Foreign Interference in U.S. Elections

OFAC adopted regulations that would permit the use of sanctions against foreign persons found interfering in U.S. elections, pursuant to Executive Order 13848. These regulations will become effective on April 29, 2019.

In September 2018, President Trump signed Executive Order 13848, which states that interference into U.S. elections from foreign persons constitutes a threat to U.S. national security and foreign policy. The regulations adopted by OFAC were issued in abbreviated form in order to "provid[e] immediate guidance to the public."

OFAC noted that it plans to release further regulations pursuant to this action.
