CRS Reviews Eligibility for COVID-19 Recovery Rebates
The Congressional Research Service ("CRS") addressed whether individuals enrolled in Social Security and supplemental security income ("SSI") services will receive recovery rebates under the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security Act ("CARES Act").
In its report, the CRS stated, among other things, that the IRS is urging eligible individuals to file tax returns for 2018 or 2019 as soon as possible in order to receive the rebate. The CRS noted that individuals eligible for recovery rebates under the CARES Act include all Social Security beneficiaries (e.g., disabled workers, eligible family members and survivors) and SSI recipients, unless such beneficiaries and recipients are claimed as dependents on a taxpayer's return or do not meet the eligibility requirements.
